Theme: Selections from Anthology Film Archives’ Andy Warhol Foundation Project: Avant-Garde Film-makers, 1975-1990.

Anthology Film Archives, founded in 1970 in New York City by Jonas Mekas, is an international center for the preservation, study, and exhibition of film and video, with a particular focus on independent, experimental, and avant-garde cinema. Every year Anthology restores and preserves between 20 and 40 media works with over 900 titles preserved to date. In 2009 with funding from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Anthology began a major initiative to preserve media work by American artists active between 1975-1990.

Through these efforts, Anthology has preserved over 100 films and videos. This lecture will cover this period of American avant-garde cinema with a screening of a selection of works preserved through this initiative.

Theme: Anthology Film Archives and Contemporary Media Preservation: Anthology Film Archives, founded in 1970 in New York City by Jonas Mekas, is an international center for the preservation, study, and exhibition of film and video, with a particular focus on independent, experimental, and avant-garde cinema. Anthology maintains an invaluable collection of approximately 20,000 films and 5,000 videotapes and preserves 25-35 films each year with more than 900 titles preserved to date.This lecture will focus on recent Anthology projects, providing examples for exploring contemporary media preservation practices including: photochemical restoration techniques; high resolution scanning of small gauge film; and videotape digitization.

JOHN KLACSMANN

John Klacsmann (b. 1985, Augusta, Georgia, USA) is Archivist at Anthology Film Archives in New York City. He manages Anthology’s principle audio-visual collections including: inspecting, repairing, and cataloging film originals, prints, and video tapes; supervising preservation projects; assisting researchers; and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the archives and collection vaults. He has worked on preserving films of the American Avant-Garde including those by: Hollis Frampton, Harry Smith, and Paul Sharits, among others. Klacsmann holds a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from Washington University in St. Louis. He graduated from the L. Jeffrey Selznick School of Film Preservation at the George Eastman House in 2008 and was a film preservation specialist and optical printing technician at Colorlab, a film laboratory in Maryland, before joining Anthology in 2012. His interests include stroboscopic cinema, antiquated Technicolor dye-transfer systems, and Unix-like operating systems.
