JMVAC exhibition at The Cooper Union Gallery in New York: Anything can substitute art: George Maciunas in SoHo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mekas.lt\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screen-shot-2015-06-21-at-22-51-50-2.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-1165 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/mekas.lt\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screen-shot-2015-06-21-at-22-51-50-2.png?w=300\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-06-21 at 22.51.50\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mekas.lt\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screen-shot-2015-06-21-at-22-51-50-2.png 488w, https:\/\/mekas.lt\/www\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/screen-shot-2015-06-21-at-22-51-50-2-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><strong>Anything can substitute ar<\/strong><strong>t: George Maciunas in SoHo, a singular exhibition that has brought never seen before Maciunas pieces held by the Jonas Mekas Visual Arts Center in Vilnius, Lithuania to the United States opened at The Cooper Union Gallery in New York on December 11.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Lithuanian-born artist, architect, designer, and &#8222;chairman&#8221; of Fluxus, <span class=\"xn-person\">George Maciunas <\/span>(1931-1978, <span class=\"xn-person\">Cooper Union School <\/span>of Art graduate 1952) radically challenged the idea of avant-garde art &#8211; as object, concept, or commodity.\u00a0Fluxus, an international community of conceptual artists, poets and composers, redefined the role of the artist by substituting art for everyday tasks, experiences, actions, and sensations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The works of Ay-O, <span class=\"xn-person\">George Brecht <\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Geoffrey Hendricks <\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Alison Knowles <\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Larry Miller <\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Mieko Shiomi <\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Nam June Paik <\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Ben Vautier <\/span>, <span class=\"xn-person\">Robert Watts <\/span>, and <span class=\"xn-person\">Emmett Williams <\/span>are included in this exhibition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Also included are rarely exhibited early works by Maciunas: his self-portraits, the entire Atlas of Russian History (1953), Fluxus manifestos, charts, interviews, and plans for artists&#8217; housing in SoHo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">&#8222;<span class=\"xn-location\">Lithuania<\/span> is very proud of <span class=\"xn-person\">George Maciunas <\/span>and that the Fluxus movement had such a profound impact. Every day presents us with opportunities to see things as surprising, unusual or unexpected. These Fluxus moments bring us out of complacency and foster creativity and imagination. We should all have a dose of Fluxus every day to get ourselves fired up for coming up with new ideas and solving issues,&#8221; stated Arturas Zuokas, Mayor of the <span class=\"xn-location\">City of Vilnius<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Visitors will also be able to view films by the legendary avant-garde filmmaker <span class=\"xn-person\">Jonas Mekas <\/span>who was a close friend and colleague of <span class=\"xn-person\">George Maciunas <\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Vice Mayor of Vilnius Jaroslav Kaminski and the Director of Administration of <span class=\"xn-location\">Vilnius<\/span>, Valdas Klimantavicius, were at the opening to celebrate this important event.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><i>Anything can substitute art: <span class=\"xn-person\">George Maciunas <\/span>in SoHo<\/i> was created in collaboration with The Jonas Mekas Visual Arts Center and The School of Art at <span class=\"xn-org\">The Cooper Union<\/span> and was curated by<span class=\"xn-person\">Astrit Schmidt-Burkhardt <\/span>.
